Early tartans were limited by what a hand loom and natural dyes could do — usually two to four colours, repeated simply. The jacquard loom, mechanised through the nineteenth century, made complex multi-colour setts affordable to weave at scale for the first time.
That is a large part of why the elaborate, many-coloured tartans we associate with formal clan dress mostly date from after 1820, not before it.
